About Art Therapy

Art Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses different art materials to help one increase self-awareness, develop coping skills, and enhance cognitive abilities. It is a three way relationship building process with the client, the artwork, and the therapist in a private and respectful environment.

Art therapy session can be provided to an individual or group setting in a variety settings, such as residential, educational and community based organizations. The aim of art therapy is to increase self understanding, improve mental wellness, gain personal insight, enhance emotional coping skills or recovery power, and encourage personal growth through the process of art making and the reflection on the artworks.

Liyan (ChrisB) Liu

Registered Psychotherapist,
Art Therapist

I am a registered Psychotherapist in Ontario and registered Art Psychotherapist in the UK. I have professional membership with the Canadian Art Therapy Association. My philosophy of practice is to provide a nonjudgmental, safe and private environment for clients to build up their creativity, strength and resilience through freely express their emotion with art.

I strive to work with people through different art forms because I believe creative art is a powerful platform, which allows people to communicate and connect with their inner souls and emotion. Colour, pattern and layout become storytellers through their expression. Art can be the voice for the voiceless, the process for healing the scars in our lives, the appreciation of our surroundings and the transformation of our worldview for a better future.

I specialize in working with immigrant populations living with issues of trauma, mental health and addictions. I have professional experience in providing individual or group art therapy sessions in a variety of settings including charity organizations, detention centre, long term care centre, school and out-patient hospital unit. My experience includes working with vulnerable children, youth, adults and seniors who have suffered from anxiety, anger, dementia, substance abuse, stress, homelessness and various emotional, educational and behavioural struggles.
